School of Aging Studies student wins award at Southern Gerontological Society Conference

Natalia Babenko's research interests include preventing Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and related dementias, social connection and engagement, health behavior and cognition of older adults, and the mental health of cancer survivors. 

Natalia Babenko, a doctoral student in the School of Aging Studies, was awarded third place in the poster competition at the Southern Gerontological Society Annual Meeting & Conference for her study titled "The Benefits of Social Connection and Engagement in Combating Depressive Symptoms Among Older Cancer Survivors."

The study, co-authored with doctoral student Joanne Elayoubi, Brent Small, PhD, and Distinguished University Professor William E. Haley, PhD, in the School of Aging Studies, explores whether social connection and engagement have a greater protective effect on depressive symptoms in cancer survivors compared to individuals without cancer.
