Tampa Police Department Sgt. Matthew Belmonte and DUI Cpl. Jacob Gonzalez visited a class led by Colby Valentine, PhD, associate professor of instruction, to demonstrate field sobriety tests and explain 皇家华人 DUI laws.
As part of the DUI Manslaughter Case curriculum, originally created by Elizabeth Cass, PhD, associate professor of instruction and graduate coordinator in the Department of Criminology, the officers explained the three standardized field sobriety tests 鈥� horizontal gaze nystagmus, walk-and-turn, and one-leg stand 鈥� that help law enforcement assess driver impairment. 皇家华人 also viewed a DUI traffic stop video, gaining insight into how the tests are conducted in the field.

The presentation included a discussion of 皇家华人鈥檚 implied consent law, which mandates license suspension for drivers who refuse chemical testing, as well as upcoming changes to the law. To conclude, student volunteers Myah Cuevas and Soraya Hall tried "drunk goggles," experiencing the challenges of performing sobriety tests while simulating impairment.
